A weeknight out

An Italian dinner near La Penne-sur-Huveaune, even on a Tuesday night

La Penne-sur-Huveaune is a small town between Marseille and Aubagne, in the Huveaune valley. When you live there, the urge for a good plate of pasta on a weeknight often runs into logistics: the drive, the parking, the time you get home. We wanted the answer to be simple. About 9 km separate you from our table, that is 10 to 15 minutes depending on traffic, and free parking is available right next to the restaurant. On a Tuesday or a Thursday evening, going out therefore takes no special planning.

Dinner service starts at 7:00 PM and ends at 10:30 PM, every day of the week. Two moments lend themselves to a relaxed evening: arriving right at opening, at 7:00 PM, when the room fills up gently and the aperitivo can be enjoyed without rushing, or coming after 9:00 PM, when the first tables free up and there is more choice of where to sit. At weekends, on the other hand, booking is strongly recommended.

On the plate, nothing is left to chance. The chefs are Italian, so is the manager, and all the cooking is homemade, with most ingredients imported directly from Italy: extra virgin olive oil, PDO cheeses, Italian cured meats, San Marzano tomatoes and flours. This standard goes back to Pepe Zino himself, the grandfather of the two founders, who wanted to share genuine family recipes in a spirit of generosity. To find out more, read the Pepe Zino family story.

Aperitivo hour

Start with aperitivo: Spritz, cocktails and Italian wines

In Italy, dinner often begins a little before sitting down to eat, glass in hand. That is the moment we invite you to rediscover after your day. The four Spritz on the menu are 7 €: Aperol, Campari, Limoncello and Hugo, the latter made with elderflower liqueur and fresh mint. All cocktails are 8 €: Negroni, Americano, Boulevardier, Basil Smash with gin and basil, Limoncello Mojito or Espresso Martini. For a more Provençal touch, the Pagnol and the Pastis Sour combine Pastis 51, fresh lemon juice and egg white.

For Italian wines, the list brings together four wines from Maenza Vini: the Bea Catarratto 2025, a white served by the glass (5 € for 12 cl) or by the bottle (20 €), the Ohana Grillo 2025, also a white (22 € a bottle), the Rricò Perricone 2024, a red offered at 7 € a glass or 30 € a bottle, and the Jacques Syrah 2022 (25 € a bottle). If you are the one driving back to La Penne-sur-Huveaune, the alcohol-free mocktails, such as the Virgin Mojito or the Tutti Frutti, are 7 €.

The board, then the main

A board to share, then pasta or pizza

The glass comes with a board. The mixed board (22 €, for two people) brings together Parma ham, Bologna mortadella, fennel sausage, bresaola, coppa, pecorino pepato, gorgonzola, spianata and taleggio. The cheese board (20 €, also for two) lines up three pecorinos, parmigiano reggiano, taleggio, asiago, gorgonzola and a 100 g burrata. For a lighter nibble, the focaccia & burrata (9 €) or the polpette (10 €) do the job nicely. All the starters are detailed on our antipasti in Aubagne page.

Then it is time for the main course. On the pasta side, the cacio e pepe (12 €) is the most straightforward, the carbonara Roma with guanciale and egg yolk (16 €) the most indulgent, and the linguine alla vongole with clams (17 €) the most briny. The casarecce pesto di Liguria (14 €), with fresh basil, pine nuts and almonds, wins over those who love green flavours. And for truffle lovers, the casarecce Tartufo with truffle cream is 16 €.

More in a pizzeria mood? From La Penne-sur-Huveaune, our eight pizzas are worth the drive too, with one simple rule: they are enjoyed at the table only. From the Marinara (9 €) and the Margherita (11 €) to the Diavola (15 €), all the way to the Pepe Zino, our signature pizza with mortadella, goat cheese and pistachio (18 €). To see everything, browse our pizzas in Aubagne or the full restaurant menu.
